Professor Netstein today answered questions on the exciting SPARKX service :

Q – Professor, could you please explain what SPARKX exactly is ?

A – Sure. SPARKX is a data communication service from Etisalat that turns your ordinary telephone line into a high-speed digital connection and allows you to downstream or download data at speeds 10 to 40 times more than that of a conventional modem. In our circles, this technology is called ADSL.
Q – What does ADSL stand for and how does it work ?
A – Ah, yes, ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It takes advantage of the unused bandwidth in your phone line. So this allows you to access the Internet, video-conference and even use your phone simultaneously !

The ADSL signal is carried between two ADSL modems – one at the user’s end and the other one at the local phone exchange. They are fitted with “splitters” – a device that allows you to surf the Internet or send a fax and talk on your telephone at the same time !
Q- That is really fantastic, Professor, but tell me what are the other advantages of

SPARKX ?

A – Another advantage is the speed. People normally use a 56 K modem these days. But with the SPARKX service you can achieve 10 to 40 times more speed.

Q – What are the benefits of SPARKX, Professor ?

A – Well, with SPARKX, you no longer have to dial up for your Internet connection. It is
“Always On”. Secondly, multimedia on the World Wide Web, Video conferencing, Online Shopping, Distance Education through the Internet is a richer experience because of the faster speed. And the flexibility – you can surf, fax, download etc. and use your phone all at the same time.

Q – What is the PC configuration that will work best with SPARKX ?

A – Minimum 100 MHz Pentium processor, Windows 95/98 or Windows NT, 20 MB of available hard disk space and minimum 16 MB RAM.
Q – How much will SPARKX cost us ?

A – Initially. SPARKX offers “Always On” access to Emirates Internet. There is an Installation charge of Dh. 200/- and a monthly charge of Dhs. . Apart from this, we also have a special one year contract rate. Emirates Internet charges also apply.
